Students had a chance this past week Monday, Nov. 1 to Friday, Nov. 5 to complete their workbook assignment and catchup on their @Home Tutor Section A / B if 7th grade or Section B / C if 8th grade, for Unit 2, Lesson 1.

Our quiz for this Unit will consist on recognizing the vocabulary presented on Unit 2, Lesson 1 as seen on the power point seen in class two weeks ago. You should all have copies of this pp on your USB drive. You will be asked to write down the correct name of the vocabulary in Spanish as presented on this power point.

We are off to a good start this 2nd Quater! We will be presenting UNIT 2 and UNIT 3. Each Unit consists of two lessons, and each lesson will take approximately two weeks to complete. This means that workbook, and extra point @Home Tutor assignments must be completed by midnight of the last day the Unit's first or second Lesson ends. Late work or assignment will not be accepted after the above prescribed time.

Students should have known to use this weekend as a catchup time to complete reading and workbook assignments for the first Lesson section of Unit 2. I provided a detailed reading and workbook guide every week throughout the first quarter of Spanish class to get students started. This will not happen on the Second Quarter. Students need to begin taking responsibility and control of their study habits. A guide will still be provided but it will not be as detailed as 1st Quarter.

By now, students should be familiar with all the vocab and questions presented on Lesson 1 of this Unit, and should have completed more than half of the Workbook for the Lesson 1 section of this Unit. If you have not done this, I suggest you do so. Do not wait until the last minute!

This marks the END of the 1st Qt. .. All grade scores for this quarter have thus far been posted with the exception of the Project Paragraph Assignment Due this coming Monday, October 18th.

The MAP POP TEST was an overwhelming success for both the 7th and 8th graders. The combined scores of this Test and the extra points earned by the majority of students from the @Home Tutor assignment reports boosted students' grades by one or sometimes two letter grades. Congratulations! Your hard work paid off! Now, we are off to Unit 2 and 3 for the 2nd Quarter which will commence next Monday, Oct. 18 as we begin the 1st Week of the 2nd Quarter. Remember, maintaining the vocabulary learned and/or presented thus far in the Preliminary or Unit 1 section, are key components for the successful execution of the Units to come. So, continue to go back and review the flashcards available at the CLASS ZONE website.

WEEKEND ASSIGNMENT -
1- Character Description:
Using an image from a cartoon character, clip art, magazine-cut-off, home photo, drawing, etc such as the image above, write two paragraph describing the character of your choosing, its likes and dislikes using the adjectives, nouns and pronouns presented as part of your vocabulary in Lesson 1 and 2. This assignment will need to be typed using a 12 size font and double spaced if possible on one sheet of paper.

Rubric will consist as follows: 15 pts.

2 Pts. for image selection
3 Pts. for spelling (including accents) *
3 Pts. for correct grammar (making sure article matches noun's gender, pronoun, verb conjugation, etc.)
2 Pts. for vocabulary usage (you may use new vocabulary, but I want to see the ones presented in Unit)
5 Pts. for overall content and presentation of assignment.

DUE: Monday, Oct. 18 Assignment must be TYPED and have a TITLE.
A Maximum of 3 pt. Bonus may be given to those assignments that I consider have gone above and beyond expectation.

* If you do not know how to apply the accents simply put them in by hand before handing your paper in.

We will culminate Unit 1 by preparing a Poster Board Project were students will draw, color, paint, or use any other "Art" means to create a visual character or cartoon comic strip of their choosing. This will be both an oral and written project where you will describe your character or cartoon, and tell of its likes, dislikes, and description of how it looks, using the vocabulary presented thus far on Unit 1. Now it's your chance to use your creative, artistic ability to have some fun in Spanish Class. Score will be based on the amount of effort put into developing this project as a whole, not the artistic ability.

Conference Week is finally over! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those parents who took time off their very busy schedule to meet with me to discuss their students' progress in Spanish class. Those who were not able to meet with me may still make special arrangements via Email.
After reassessing the first few weeks of Spanish Class, and talking to some of the parents and students, I have decided to implement the following changes to the course.
1- Grades/Quizzes will return to the point system used last year. (With the help of my colleagues I was able to determine how to implement the point system in the JMC system rather than the percentage system normally used to calculate grades at Lourdes.)

2- Students will now have one computer lab day a week for Spanish class to complete some of the Extra Point assignments offered at the @Home Tutor. (Keep in mind that logistically it will not be possible for them to finish the entire @home tutor section at school so they may still have to finish some of it at home.)

3- Saturday and Monday Morning Spanish Blog updates will now be posted in class. There will also be an additional copy posted by the Computer lab room downstairs in the school's library.

The long awaited MAP TEST was presented this week. Although students had a total of 5 weeks to prepare for this pop test, the overall results, particularly for the 7th graders, was not very good. As a result, Test has been reaccessed, scores recalculated and grading scale changed. Students will now have only one opportunity to improve their final scores. This will remain a Pop Test to be given sometime before the 1st Qt. is up. Test is now valued at 68 pts. (2pts. per country) with an additional Bonus of 2 pts. for those who achieve a perfect score. I encourage students to learn the location of these Latin American countries and others, not just to study for the test. The Objective here is for them to actually learn the content and not forget it. Students will eventually have to learn the capitals of these countries in the 2nd Qt. and prepare a Power Point report on the Latin American country of their choice in their 4th Qt. We will continue to dwell into some of the cultural aspects of the people who speak the language as we learn to speak or understand it.

El niño esta estudiando.

Students were given the following instructions:

1- All 7th and 8th Grade students have been given their individual Worked book. This Workbook should have their Name and Grade on the top right hand corner of the front cover.

2- Workbooks and Laminated Study sheets are to be kept at HOME and NOT in the student's lockers until further notice.

3- Workbook assignments will not start until we reach UNIT 1 on the textbook. Currently we are working on the Preliminary Unit.

4- Students are to bring a 3 hole pocket file by the end of this week to place Summary Cards received. This file will also be kept at Home for ease of study.

5- Students need to go to Classzone and register to record their progress. Have your parents help you with this ..... http://www.classzone.com/cz/books/avancemos_1/login.htm

6- Since we do not have enough textbooks to go around students have been registered to use an online textbook compliments of Holt McDougal. There will be reading assignments, quizzes and test at this Website for students to take. Each student will receive an individual User ID and a Password Friday, Sept. 3/10.

7- There will be two Student textbooks available at the Library for reference, consultation and possible checkout.

STUDENTS ARE OFF TO A GOOD START THIS YEAR!
They have all received their workbook by now and were asked to sign their Name and Class Grade on the top right hand corner of WB cover. These workbooks are to be kept at home, NOT in their school lockers so they can have daily access to them. The teacher will let them know when to bring them back to school to be checked. Workbook assignment will not start until we reach Unit one. They will start off with a Preliminary Unit. Each Unit is composed of two lessons. The plan is to complete two Units per quarter to total the 8 Units that completes this Level One Book.

There are many resources that can be found on the right hand side of this blog. I encourage students to make use of them so they can practice the concepts that we will be learning in the weeks to come. In this regard, they have also been asked and shown how to go to the CLASSZONE link and practice the content of each Unit as we see them in class.

STUDY HOMEWORK: Study the name and location of ALL the countries in North, Central and South America including the main islands on the Caribbean. There will be a an important "Pop Quiz" worth 50 pts Students will have three chances to get them ALL correct. If not, they will receive the original first grade he or she got on the first quiz. They are all aware of this.

READING HOMEWORK: Has already been done in class. Currently I am working on getting approval so that ALL students can have access to the online text of "Avancemos textbook" since this is a shared book that cannot be taken home. More on this later.

WRITTEN HOMEWORK: No official homework at this point

I will uploading posts periodically with regards to assignments. We will begin next week with the preliminary Unit which I hope to complete in one to two weeks with 8th graders as it is a review, and maybe two weeks with 7th graders.

I have asked students to provide an email where I can email them individually in case I have any special instructions to give them.

WELCOME TO SPANISH CLASS!

Globalization underlines the economic importance behind learning a new language. The most important reason however, is to be able to communicate with others, and through this promote a greater level of understanding among people and their different cultures. You might ask, why out of so many possible languages should we choose Spanish? The question is not ... Why? ... but ... Why not?

Consider the following facts:

It is estimated 500 million people speak Spanish around the world (over 30 million in the USA)
It is the second most important spoken language in the world tied with English
It is the third most used language in the Internet, Chinese being the first and English the second
It is the most popular foreign language to learn after English
It is one of the six official languages in the United Nations
It opens more doors in the job market

Learning a language embodies more than just learning how to speak or communicate in a foreign language; it embodies learning about how different cultures or people think, feel, work, and live. You will also get a feel of their music, food, policies and national holidays. Learning about their idiosyncrasies will not only promote a higher level of understanding of the people who speak the language, but it will also teach us to appreciate our own.

In this course, you will get out of it what you put into it. If you work hard, and connect the pieces you will not only learn about other countries, but also be on the path to becoming bilingual. I have been a witness to this accomplishment in the past. SO, let's give it our best shot!
